Delarey Mc William Smith and his girlfriend Anita Swaak left their home country of South Africa in 1992 to tour Europe for a year. They worked and travelled through several European countries before arriving in Athens, Greece in May 1993. There they met Swaak's mother and spent some time with her. On May 18, the couple continued to the island of Naxos, while Swaak's mother went to Santorini. Naxos is a large island, in May already full with tourists. Only one person remembered seeing them there. When their families had not heard from them by July 13, they decided to file missing persons reports with the police.
